Plastic free July has ended, but my journey really has only begun. I have so many ideas for how to practically walk out an Earth Conscious lifestyle and how to encourage others to do so as well!
I just need more time and patience…
In some ways I really don’t feel I was extremely successful in my Plastic Free July. There were many times I bought things in plastic or forgot to ask for “no straw please” at the restaurant. For these reasons I decided to focus on how my progress is more important than my perfection.
Of course, my hope is that society itself will realize the error of its ways, and that walking out a perfect environmentally conscious lifestyle will be easy. For now thats just a dream that I will continue to fantasize about at work.
In July I did make a lot of progress, even in the midst of several failures. Many of the progress was particularly good because they are long-term solutions to plastic in my life. I now have bamboo toothbrushes, a Kishu charcoal water filter instead of Brita filters, and beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap. These long-term solutions to plastic will truly add up and make a difference in my footprint on the earth, but like I said, my journey has only begun.
Next month I’m taking the next step in my plastic-free journey. Instead of lowering my plastic, I’m simply not going to throw away any of my plastic for the entire month.
Crazy I know, but hear me out.
Instead of throwing it away or recycling it, I’m going to collect it so that I can see where I need to find plastic free alternatives. A lot of times we get so caught up in our lives that we lose sight of the big picture.
I would hate to truly think I’ve become more environmentally conscious, but still be throwing away plastic that I just don’t think about. As I go through this process in September I will definitely be blogging through photos on my Instagram. At the end I’ll compile them all, look for alternatives, and share them with you!
I recently asked my friends on Facebook for ideas on how to get others engaged in environmental awareness like myself. I got some awesome feedback, especially from Ms. Hawes my first grade teacher!
Shout out to you lovely woman you!
I’ll be writing my blogs to be multi-faceted.
I want to encourage those unaware of their negative impact to take small meaningful steps to save the environment.
I also want to engage those already taking take small steps and challenge them further in their journey.
I also desire to creatively impact those walking environmentally friendly lives with new ways of thinking for their earth conscious living!
In the coming months there will be so much to do, read, and write and I’m glad you’re with me on this journey! I know that as we change small things in our lives, we truly will make lasting impacts that will transform our world!
